The Persian plateau is a geographical concept based on historical aspects which have been a habitat for Iranian tribes and the mainland area of Iran throughout different historical periods.
The central Persian plateau is situated between the Zagros mountains to the northwest and west, the Alborz mountains to the north, and the dry lowlands on the shores of the Sea of Oman and Persian Gulf to the south. To its east, it contains two uninhabitable deserts, Dasht-e Kavir, located in the north and Lut Desert in the south. The edges of these two deserts are marked by the city of Kashan to the west and the Bastam region of Shahroud to the north. These marginal regions have more moderate weather with higher precipitation levels, but they also have a warm and arid climate which makes life difficult on this plateau.
